INDIANAPOLIS — As hundreds of new tech jobs are coming to Indianapolis, Central Indiana high schools and universities are working hard to prepare students for jobs in the booming industry of science, technology, engineering and math. The current students who will eventually become employees are already taking notice of Indiana’s jobs and opportunities.
At Indiana University Purdue University — Indianapolis the 'Indianapolis STEM Project' serves as a pipeline for high school students who want to explore a career in the tech and medicine fields. Zionsville High School senior, Alexa Brown, is among the Indiana teens taking advantage of the connections IUPUI has built with area employers, such as Eli Lilly. The project has given Brown an up-close look at the STEM industry, and while still a senior in high school she's already looking at the jobs Indianapolis has to offer.
"I think there are a lot of opportunities, even as a younger person. I see a lot of openings,” Brown said. “I have been offered a position at the lab that I have been in for the last two summers, more-or-less, and I'm looking forward to spending more time there."
Brown is already ahead of the curve after spending time observing the careers she wants to pursue. She encourages other students who may not be exactly sure on what they want to do to explore STEM, as she has realized the opportunities are endless.
