Columbus homeless shelter celebrates one year in operation

Posted

COLUMBUS, Ind. – One year after a woman had a vision to open a homeless shelter in Columbus, Indiana, she celebrated a milestone.

Brighter Days Housing has been in operation for one year and serves 15 to 30 people each night.

Executive Director Elizabeth Kestler said the one year mark meant reflecting on the shelter's past and its goals for the future.

With the help of a Columbus township trustee, who donated a space previously used to house fire trucks, Kestler’s vision was able to become reality in 2016.

“We were discovering the need was growing. It was different than it was 10 years ago, 5 years ago,” she said.

Renovations of the space made room for housing, showers and a kitchen.

Kestler depends on volunteers, a small staff and community donations to help keep Brighter Days in operation. She said they could always use more help.

“We are averaging around 61 a month volunteers,” said Kestler. “We would like to have 240.”
