COLUMBUS, Ind. -- A man accused of using card skimming machines in Columbus, Indiana was arrested by police Wednesday.
The man was found when a witness reported seeing a man at an ATM in the 3500 block of West Jonathan Moore Pike shortly before 7 a.m. He was at the ATM for an extended period of time, so they called police.
When officers arrived to the ATM, the suspect, later identified as Claudiu C. Mihai, 23, of Yonkers, New York, ran on foot. He was caught by police a short time late.
Police recovered more than $1,100, as well as several gift cards that had been reprogrammed into debit cards utilizing the victims’ bank account information.
Mihai was arrested on a preliminary charge of resisting law enforcement, but more preliminary charges are likely, police say.
Over the past couple days, the Columbus Police Department received complaints, saying that fraudulent withdraws were made to their bank accounts. The victims advised officers that they were still in possession of their cards and suspected a skimming device was used to replicate the information.
Police say you should check your bank account for fraudulent activity. If you find fraudulent charges, call your financial institution immediately.
