BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington Police are investigating a sexual assault late Monday.

The department issued a press release Tuesday which said the assault took place in a stairwell of the victim's apartment building in the 400 block of East 2nd Street, a few blocks from the IU campus.

A 23-year-old woman reported she had gone to a local gym to exercise, then stopped at a store before walking home.

The victim told investigators she had seen a man walking near the intersection of 2nd Street and Grant Street and was then grabbed from behind around her neck as she was about to walk into the apartment building.

Police say the young woman lost consciousness because of the choking and when she came to, was being held down in a stairwell where she was sexually assaulted.

Police were called to the scene at about 11:30 p.m. where they collected evidence.

The victim went to the hospital.

She described the suspect as an unknown race male wearing black or dark-colored clothing and tan or wheat-colored boots.

Anyone who believes they may have seen the suspect or anyone with any information about the assault is asked to call Bloomington Police Detective Jeff Rodgers at (812)349-3318.
