BLOOMINGTON -- Students in 19 dorm rooms at Teter Quad on the IU Bloomington campus returned from winter break only to find themselves reassigned to different housing.
The reason is mold.
University spokesman Chuck Carney says close to 400 rooms in the dorm complex were tested for mold while students were gone for the holidays.
19 rooms fell into the "red category," meaning an unacceptable mold level.
Residents were moved to other dorms or off-campus housing at school expense.
The students will spend spring semester in their new quarters rather than move back to Teter since the quad will be renovated during the summer.
Teter Quad opened in 1959 and is one of three IU dorms where mold was recently found.
In October the university said mold was present in rooms at the Foster and McNutt quads.
At the time, John Applegate, Vice President of University Academic Affairs acknowledged a "significant issue" with mold and said the school had not responded quickly enough to the to the problem but was determined to make things right.
