BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- Deputy Jacob Pickett's sister penned a heartfelt message Tuesday, revealing a bit more about a man with a big heart and an infectious laugh.

Deputy Pickett was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a suspect in Lebanon last week.

Deputy Pickett's sister, Kristi, said her brother loved helping other people.

"He had such a big heart and a great personality," she wrote in a statement. "He had a laugh that was contagious and always had a smile on his face."

She said her 5-year-old daughter, Deputy Pickett's niece, was crazy about him.

"Hannah would say 'Uncle Jake, I want a silly picture!' Without missing a beat, he would give her a silly face," Kristi told RTV6.

Kristi described Deputy Pickett as an animal person, especially with his K-9 partner, Brik.

"If Brik was not by his side, he was talking about him. It was fitting that Brik was by his side on that fatal day."

Kristi said she is devastated, but was grateful for the support of the community.
