BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- The man accused of fatally shooting a Boone County deputy Friday afternoon is no stranger to the law but does not appear to have any violent charges on his record.
Indiana State Police believe Anthony Baumgardt, 21, shot and fatally wounded Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett as he was rounding a corner during a foot pursuit Friday morning.
ISP Superintendent Doug Carter says he's at a loss as to why anyone would shoot a law enforcement officer:
Baumgardt was shot by another officer during the exchange and was treated at Methodist Hospital before being released into police custody Saturday afternoon.
Baumgardt is preliminarily facing the following six charges:
- Murder
- Resisting Law Enforcement
- Carrying a Handgun without a License
- Possession of Marijuana
- Possession of Methamphetamine between 5-10 grams
- Possession of Methamphetamine below 5 grams

His last conviction was in 2016 for misdemeanor theft.
