WHITESTOWN — The Whitestown Fire Department will honor two residents Saturday after they helped save a man from a burning house.

Cody and Brittney Hartman had left a friend's house on Dec. 5 when they saw heavy smoke coming from another house in the 3700 block of Dusty Sands Road, according to a news release from the Whitestown Fire Department.

The Hartmans went inside through the front door and found the resident inside before getting him out of the house and calling 911.

The homeowner was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition and is still hospitalized with third-degree burns on 30% of his body.

“Without the quick thinking, selfless, and heroic actions that Cody and Brittney performed that night, the outcome would have undoubtedly been much worse,” Chief Josh Westrich said in a release. “Cody and Brittney are civilian heroes that saved a man’s life.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
