ZIONSVILLE — A Zionsville school was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday after a container of ammunition was found during a routine perimeter check.

In a message sent to parents, Zionsville schools Superintendent Scott Robison said the clear container held eight to 10 rounds of unspent ammunition. The container was found near a parking lot-sidewalk intersection at Zionsville West Middle School.

School officials and the Boone County Sheriff's Office placed the school on lockdown and a detailed investigation and perimeter search was conducted. Officials reviewed school security camera footage to find a vehicle from which the container fell.

Deputies said the container fell out of the vehicle as a child got out to enter the school. At no time was a weapon involved and there was never a threat to the public, deputies said.

"Our team approach to school safety is essential — from attentive student (and other) eyes on our campuses, to technologies that can sometimes assist us to a fast resolution," Robison said in a statement. "In between there are brave law enforcement officials and school officials who train and react well during the crises that come to and through the schoolhouse door in 2018."

The investigation resulted in about an hour delay to the start of the school day. Once the "all clear" was given students were allowed to enter and resume their normal schedule.

"The quick work of school officials and diligent investigation of our law enforcement officers, truly shows that student safety, the teachers' safety and any visitors on school campuses is our main priority," Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen said in a statement. "The coordination between both entities played out extremely well. We must continue to work together like this when possible threats arise. Luckily, at no time was anyone's safety at risk here."
