CARMEL — The Carmel Clay school board approved putting a referendum on the November ballot to meet some school safety measures.
Voters will decide on a tax levy of five cents for every $100 of assessed property value.
It would last eight years and pay for security measures, such as adding eight school resource officers.
"Doing everything we can and putting layer upon layer is going to give us our best chance of preventing a catastrophe," Carmel Clay Schools superintendent Michael Beresford said. "But then also it's going to be part of how we respond to those situations, and if we do have a bad situation, whether it's weather or violence, if will help us recover from it."
Improving school safety has become an even bigger issue after the school shooting massacre in Parkland, Fla. in February 2018 and after a Noblesville West Middle School student shot a classmate and teacher in May 2018.
