13-year-old boy critically injured after being struck by train in Logansport

LOGANSPORT — A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a train Thursday afternoon in Logansport, according to police.

The boy was walking eastbound on the tracks, got off the tracks and walked in the ballast area when an eastbound train was coming towards him, and was struck by "an unknown object," a preliminary investigation found, according to a press release from the Logansport Police Department.

Officers and emergency personnel were called to the incident around 4:10 p.m. in the 800 block of East Melbourne Avenue, near the Wabash River.

The boy was awake when officers arrived, according to the release. He was flown by a medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

The department is still investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to call LPD Detective Flaude Dillon at 574-725-2826.
