Cause of death released for Southport police detective found dead in his car

SOUTHPORT — The cause of death for a Southport Police Department detective found dead in his car in March has been released.

Southport detective Sgt. Jason Swanson died from "Acute Asthma Exacerbation," which stemmed from a reoccurring medical condition, according to a press release from the department.

Swanson was found unresponsive in his vehicle on March 4, according to the department.

"Detective Sergeant Swanson was a dedicated public servant for many years, but it was his commitment to his family that stood above all," the deaprtment said in the release.
