BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Law enforcement sources confirm that remains found in Bloomington are not missing IU student, Lauren Spierer.

Spierer was last seen in June 2011, walking toward her apartment in Bloomington. She had just finished her sophomore year at IU.

Bloomington Police say a worker with Duke Energy discovered the human remains around 2:30 Monday afternoon on private property in the 1600 block of Rogers Street on the city's southwest side.

Forensic anthropologists with the University of Indianapolis began excavating the site at 8:30 Tuesday morning.

"At this time, we don't have any idea as far as race, age or gender. We also don't know the means of death, but those are still under investigation," said Capt. Steve Kellams, Bloomington Police.

Authorities say they don't believe that foul play was involved. It could take months or even years to identify the remains.
