INDIANAPOLIS -- 76-year-old Barbara Merrifield had a dangerously close call Sunday when a bullet came flying through her car.
Merrifield was on her way to meet her family for breakfast on Indianapolis' east side.
She was driving south on Franklin Road near English Avenue when she saw a man walking down the road.
Merrifield says she moved closer to the center line to avoid the person walking.
"He bent over like he was reaching for something and then stood back up. I thought maybe he threw a rock. All at once something just like a big rock or something hit the side of my windshield," said Merrifield
The gun shot barely missed her. Merrifield pulled over and sat there shaking, but she went on to meet her son and family and told them what happened.
They filed a report with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The reporting officer said the damage appeared to be from a rifle round and listed the crime as vandalism.
"That was shocking to me that someone shoots at your mother and that's a vandalism," said Mark Merrifield, Barbara's son.
Mark says that's not severe enough.
"If you point a gun at someone and you pull the trigger, you were attempting to kill them," said Mark.
Merrifield knows she's lucky.
"I just think my angel was looking over me," said Merrifield.
IMPD has no suspects and could not determine where the shot came from.
It is illegal to shoot a gun within city limits. A spokesperson for IMPD says if a suspect is found, the charges would likely be enhanced.
