INDIANAPOLIS — National Night Out is going to look a bit different some places this year.

The annual event promotes police-community partnerships and provides an opportunity to bring police and residents together under positive circumstances.

In Indianapolis, the annual "night out against crime" on August 4 will be modified to a Blue Lights National Night Out.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is encouraging residents to turn on an outside blue light that allows for a socially-distanced acknowledgement of the annual police/community engagement.

In Whitestown, the police department has announced plans to safely celebrate National Night Out with what's called a "Unity Patrol."

“Instead of the traditional large gathering like we have held in past years, our officers will drive through our local neighborhoods to wave at residents from a safe distance,” said Whitestown Chief of Police Scott Rolston. “We encourage families to come outside and say hi while remaining at least six feet from their neighbors.”

The drive-by celebration will begin at 6:30 pm. on August 4. The route is as follows with approximate times listed (subject to change):

  • 6:30 p.m. - Legacy Core
  • 6:45 p.m. – Walker Farms
  • 7 p.m. – Harvest Park
  • 7:15 p.m. – Clark Meadows and Edmonds Creek
  • 7:30 p.m. – Main Street (south) and Whitestown Parkway
  • 7:35 p.m. – Maple Grove
  • 7:50 p.m. – Eagles Nest and Westwood Landing
