INDIANAPOLIS — A bar on the northwest side of Indianapolis has been ordered to close after a person was critically injured in a shooting early Sunday morning.
Pike Township Fire Marshal Division Chief Jonathan Kempler said N Zone Bar and Grill was ordered to close immediately after they were operating without entertainment or construction permits.
Kempler told WRTV they routinely check for permits at businesses after critical incidents, like a shooting. The bar has been ordered to close until it gets all of the proper permits and remedy open fire code violations.
On Sunday, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the area near the bar on the report of a person shot around 3 a.m. Sunday, IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said in an email.
Officers arrived and found a person who had been shot and was in critical condition, Foley said.
Police have not released additional details about the shooting.
WRTV reached out to the owner of the bar, who declined to comment and deferred WRTV to their attorney. WRTV is working to identify and contact their attorney.
In April, JD’s Pub and Grill, Pollos Los Reyes and Team One Event were all forced to close due to not having proper permits. Shootings led to the discovery of the venues not having the proper permits.
IMPD Capt. Christopher Boomershine said that his department stopped Team One Event Center from having an event on Friday.
“I went out with the health department and the state fire marshal's office and assisted them with posting closure orders in that location, so we preempted that event, and that event did not take place,” Boomershine said. “In Indianapolis, we have over 900 liquor licenses, so keeping track of them is rather difficult. It’s even more difficult with the limited staffing that we have."
Boomershine is also calling on the public to report issues with venues. People can report issues with bars and venues directly to IMPD.
If you are interested in voicing your concern regarding a bar. You can do so by going to the ATC’s website for local board hearings. The hearings are held at the first of the month. Anyone can attend.
A permit for the bar must be on the agenda for remonstrations for when the bar's permits are up for renewal.
WRTV reached out to the owner of N Zone Bar and Grill who said he is working on obtaining the proper permits to open.
