BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Police say a Bloomington man with a warrant for his arrest for attempted murder is now in critical condition after shooting himself while fleeing from officers.
Brandon Michael Richardson, 34, was being sought by police after a woman arrived at Monroe Hospital on Wednesday with severe injuries she said were caused by Richardson.
The woman told police Richardson had repeatedly beaten her with his hands and feet, as well as a metal bar, and that he kept her confined for days in a room with a dog leash around her neck.
The woman was eventually able to escape after Richardson left the house.
On Thursday, Bloomington police put out an alert for Richardson on a warrant for attempted murder. Following that, police received information that Richardson was at an address in the 3100 block of West Vernal Pike.
On Friday, police obtained a search warrant for the Vernal Pike address. Officers blocked off the road and began approaching the house when Richardson fled the residence in a 2003 Acura.
Police said Richardson struck one police vehicle, then proceeded to travel a short distance before crashing into three other police cars. He then shot himself once in the head with a handgun.
Richardson was transported to the hospital for treatment. As of Friday afternoon, police said he remains in critical condition.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
