MUNCIE — A woman who pleaded guilty after her son died in a hot car while she was sleeping was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday.

In September 2018, Britni Wihebrink's son died after he got out of her Daleville apartment while she was sleeping after drinking and he closed himself inside the car, Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said in a press release. He was later found dead in the car.

She pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 Felony, in June.

"Prison is the only appropriate place for a parent who so miserably fails their child that the child dies as a result," Hoffman said in a press release after the sentencing. "This has been a rough week. This is the second sentencing hearing this week involving neglect of a dependent resulting in death. I cannot recall a time when such a thing has happened. My heart breaks for these innocent children who needlessly die at such a young age due to the negligence or cruelty of their parents. It is truly an indescribable tragedy."
