EVANSVILLE — An Evansville man is now in jail after becoming stuck in a chimney while trying to avoid law enforcement officers.

It happened Thursday when deputies from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, Evansville police officers and an Indiana State Police trooper assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force went to a house in the 800 block of East Riverside Drive to serve an arrest warrant.

Deputies said a 29-year-old Evansville man was wanted for violating the terms of his probation which stemmed from a conviction on charges of dealing narcotics, possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

While hiding in the house, the man attempted to avoid capture by climbing up the fireplace chimney. The man became stuck three-quarters of the way up and was unable to free himself, deputies said.

Evansville firefighters were called and partially dismantled the chimney to rescue the man, deputies said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and then booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail where he is being held without bond.
