Funeral arrangements announced for war veteran struck and killed in hit-and-run

INDIANAPOLIS -- Funeral arrangements have been announced for a veteran of the war in Afghanistan who was struck and killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run on Indianapolis' southeast side. 

The crash happened on Feb. 24 around 3:30 a.m., on Southeastern Avenue, near Prospect Street.

Sgt. Joseph Nordstrom, 30, officially passed away Monday morning after being pronounced brain dead.

Nordstrom served in the Army National Guard for 11 years, including a tour in Afghanistan. He was a graduate of Northwest High School.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 2, from 2 - 8 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan - Decatur Township, 5463 Kentucky Avenue. 

A funeral service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, March 3, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.  Sgt. Nordstrom will be buried at Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 E. Washington St., immediately following services.

Nordstrom's girlfriend, Angela Ruhlig, was injured in the hit-and-run crash. She is expected to be OK.

Police describe the suspect vehicle as an Arizona Beige or Gold Ford F-150 pickup, made between 2004 and 2008.

Investigators say there should be damage to the front passenger side of the truck, including damage to the headlight.
