Gas City teen shot, killed by back seat passenger while driving in Marion

MARION — A 19-year-old woman was shot and killed on Tuesday while driving in Marion when a weapon was allegedly fired by a back seat passenger.

Marion Police Department officers were called just before 6 p.m. to the intersection of Mason Boulevard and South Baldwin Avenue on the report of a crash, according to a press release from MPD. When they arrived, they found the driver of one of the vehicles was unresponsive.

Detectives later learned one round from an AR-15 style rifle was discharged from inside the vehicle before the crash, according to the release. The bullet struck and killed Annalysa McMillian, 19, of Gas City.

Austin Mark Smith, 22, of Marion, was arrested and charged on the suspicion of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and reckless homicide, according to the release. Formal charges have not been filed, according to online court records.

Smith was allegedly in possession of the weapon when the round was fired, according to the release.

Two other passengers were not injured, according to the release.
