INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after officers shot an armed suspect on the west side of Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southwest District officers responded to the 900 block of South Kiel Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m. on reports of shots fired.
IMPD says the suspect fled before the officers' arrival, but the 911 caller gave a description.
The male suspect was located inside an apartment complex in the area, and officers say they gave him several verbal commands. The suspect did not listen and ran away on foot.
Officers chased the suspect for several blocks before they say he fired at least one shot at an approaching marked police vehicle, striking the front bumper.
After the suspect fired, an officer who was chasing the suspect on foot then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect, according to IMPD.
Officers gave medical aid to the suspect before he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. He suffered a graze wound to his neck.
The suspect was taken into custody. A firearm was located next to him.
Detectives learned that there was a disturbance in the apartment complex, where the suspect fired at least three rounds in the air before officers arrived. It is also alleged the suspect pointed a gun at relatives.
No officers were injured. There is no threat to the area.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officer who fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting investigation.
The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.
