INDIANAPOLIS — One man was shot and killed Monday night after a shooting near Lucas Oil Stadium, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. near South Street and Missouri Street. Police say Donnie Lee Sanders, 35, was found dead on the sidewalk.

IMPD emphasized the shooting did not happen inside Lucas Oil Stadium or the Indiana Convention Center.

"Nobody goes to work and expects to die," David Bilodeau, Sanders' coworker, told WRTV. "10 minutes ago, we're just placing boards down and then next thing you know, we're being put in a shelter in place. And he's the only one that's not accounted for."

Bilodeau says Sanders was a father. The two were preparing the convention center for an upcoming event.

"It was tough. It was tough. [He was] somebody that's happy all the time and laughing a lot. It's hard to believe," Bilodeau said. "The gun violence in this city is crazy."

Bilodeau says he's lost multiple friends to gun violence and wants others to put their guns down.

The Indiana Convention Center was locked down and employees were asked to shelter-in-place during the investigation as the shooter was believed to have entered the convention center.

Within a short time, investigators reviewed video footage and learned the suspect had exited the building.

On Wednesday, IMPD announced a 25-year-old man has been arrested.

All streets around Lucas Oil Stadium were closed off for several hours as police worked the scene.
