IMPD: One dead, one injured after shooting near CVS Pharmacy on Indianapolis' east side

INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after a shooting Wednesday afternoon near a CVS Pharmacy on the east side of Indianapolis, according to police.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and emergency personnel were called on the report of a person shot around 3 p.m. in the area of East 16th Street and North Post Road, IMPD Officer Michael Hewitt said in an email.

When they arrived, they found two people, a man and a woman, who appeared to have been shot, IMPD Officer William Young said. The woman later died. The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The relationship between the man and woman is unknown at this time.

The incident happened near CVS Pharmacy, 8935 E. 21st St., near North Post Road, Hewitt said. Detectives believe the incident happened outside the store.

Detectives are investigating the woman's death as a homicide, Young said. The woman was later identified as Kayla Stone, 29.

At least seven people were shot, two fatally, early Wednesday morning in Indianapolis. A person was also shot around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday near East Naomi and South Olive streets, according to IMPD.

It's unknown at this time if any of the incidents are possibly related.
