Indiana officer wounded, suspect dead in exchange of gunfire

UPDATE: The Indiana State Police on Monday released the name of the individual killed in a police action shooting in Huntington on Sunday. The man has been identified as Matthew T. Melzoni, 36, of Wabash. The incident remains under investigation by state police.

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana police officer was seriously wounded and a suspect was killed when gunfire erupted as police pursued a man who was damaging property with a backhoe.

Indiana State Police say a Huntington police officer was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday.

Police say the officer and the suspect were both shot in an exchange of gunfire as officers pursued the man as he used a backhoe to damage property about 3:30 a.m. in a neighborhood in Huntington, located about 20 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.
