INDIANAPOLIS — The family of Jessica Doty-Whitaker is still searching for answers three weeks after she was fatally shot on the Canal Walk in Downtown Indianapolis.
Doty-Whitaker's family and friends gathered Saturday afternoon to fight for justice at the spot where the 24-year-old woman was killed in the early hours of July 5.
Her mother, Arlena Doty, joined the group for the Justice for Jessica Doty-Whitaker Remembrance Rally and Celebration of Life March.
"There is no feeling like it," Doty said. "No mother should ever have to grow through that. We expect to bury our parents and grandparents, not our children. The loss of any child, I grieve for all children. This should not happen. We have some amazing support. I feel lost. I am still waiting for her to run through the door."
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Doty-Whitaker was shot around 3:30 a.m. July 5 near the Canal Street bridge. The homicide was one of two on the Canal Walk in recent weeks.
IMPD is increasing security in the area and adding two off-duty overnight shifts from 10:30 p.m.-5 a.m.
On July 15, IMPD released security camera photo images of people walking on the canal around the time of the shooting.
