MUNCIE — A man was arrested Thursday for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of a man at an apartment complex on the northwest side of Muncie.

Muncie Police Department officers and emergency personnel were called around 11 a.m. Thursday to the 2500 block of West White River Boulevard, near South Tillotson Avenue, on the report of shots fired, according to a probable cause affidavit. Officers later found Seth Barton shot inside a nearby apartment. He later died.

Dimorrea Benning, 18, was arrested and charged on the suspicion of murder and armed robbery, according to the affidavit. Formal charges have not been filed, according to online court records.

Investigators allege Benning and another suspect came into the apartment uninvited, pointed guns at three people inside and took guns, money and a bag possibly containing drugs, according to the affidavit. A witness allegedly told investigators the second suspect kicked Barton trying to wake him up and said, "I wanted him to see my face, and know who did this."

When Benning and the second suspect were leaving, the second suspect allegedly shot Barton, according to the affidavit.

A witness allegedly told investigators Benning and the other suspect were at the apartment earlier in the day for a previously arranged drug transaction, according to the affidavit.

Ball State University Police Department officers assisted Muncie police officers at the scene, according to online crime logs from the university.

Detectives are still looking for the second suspect, MPD Chief Nathan Sloan said. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call detectives at 765-747-4867.
