Police investigating after person shot while riding in car on I-65 in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police are investigating after a person was shot and killed while riding in a car on I-65 in Indianapolis late Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. when ISP was contacted by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department about an unconscious gun shot victim who was driven to a medical facility on W. 38th St.

It was determined the shooting occurred on I-65 near Lafayette Rd. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Malik Phillips, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance where they were pronounced dead a short time later.

Phillips was a passenger in a dark purple Toyota Scion when shots were fired from another vehicle, according to ISP Sgt. John Perrine. Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident, or who was driving in the area of I-65 and Lafayette Rd. late Tuesday afternoon and may have witnessed it, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
