MUNCIE — A man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Walmart on Muncie's south side late Thursday evening.
Muncie Police Department officers were called to the 1500 block of East 29th Street around 11:20 p.m. for a report of a shooting. Emergency crews arrived to find the victim, Chase Woolumf, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Woolumf was rushed to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
According to Deputy Chief Melissa Pease, investigators received information on the scene from witnesses who said Woolumf and another man, later identified as Justin Bennett, had an ongoing dispute and had agreed to meet in the Walmart parking lot for an altercation. The shooting occurred during that altercation, according to those witnesses.
After learning who their suspect was, police were able to put out a vehicle and suspect description and a K-9 officer in the area spotted Bennett's vehicle a short time later. Bennett fled from the officer when he tried to conduct a traffic stop but later pulled over and was arrested without incident.
Bennett is currently facing charges of murder, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a handgun without a permit as well as unrelated warrants.
The female passenger in Bennett's vehicle was also arrested and is facing a charge of obstruction of justice.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Muncie Police Department. Anyone with additional information should contact MPD or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-262-8477.
