INDIANAPOLIS — An inmate died at the Marion County Jail hours after he was arrested after being involved in a motor vehicle accident.
According to Marion County Sheriff's Office PIO Katie Carlson, Anthony Hardemon, 42, was involved in a crash around 9 p.m. April 11 and taken to Eskenazi Hospital via ambulance for treatment.
While being cared for, IMPD officers placed Hardemon under arrest for two outstanding burglary warrants, Carlson said. He was released from Eskenazi Hospital sometime after midnight and arrived at Marion County Jail Intake around 1:23 a.m. April 12.
Sometime Sunday evening, Hardemon became unresponsive while in custody. He was treated at the jail and pronounced dead just before midnight.
Carlson said no signs or symptoms of COVID-19 were present upon hospitalization or during the intake process.
The Marion County Coroner will perform an autopsy to determine Hardemon's exact cause of death. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Office are both conducting independent investigations.
No other details have been released at this time.
