Marion County Jail inmate's death investigated as homicide

INDIANAPOLIS — An inmate at the Marion County Jail died Saturday night after he was believed to have been assaulted by another inmate.

Martin Cruz, 38, was found unresponsive at around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, according to information from the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Medics transported Cruz to Eskenazi Hospital where he was pronounced deceased about an hour later.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives responded to the jail to investigate Cruz's death.

Cruz had been in custody since July 23 on multiple felony charges of child molestation and dissemination of harmful materials to minors. He had also been placed on an immigration detainer by the Department of Homeland Security, according to the sheriff's office.

IMPD, the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the Marion County Coroner's Office and the Marion County Forensic Services Agency are investigating Cruz's death.
