FAIRMONT — A 22-year-old Fairmont woman was arrested after her two-year-old son died after he found and fired a handgun, according to state police.

Caci Jo Seals was arrested and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death Wednesday morning after her son died on Dec. 15 inside a Fairmont home, Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum said in a press release.

A warrant was issued for her arrest, according to online court records. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 5 and the jury trial has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on June 1.

An investigation by state police found Seals was feeding her infant in the front room when her son, Leighton Owings, found a loaded handgun in a bedroom, fired the gun, and was struck by the bullet, Slocum said.
