MADISON COUNTY — A Madison County mom and her boyfriend were arrested after an abduction incident Sunday, Sheriff Scott Mellinger says.
On Sunday morning, deputies received a call from someone saying their 7-year-old great granddaughter was not in the home, Mellinger said in an email. The caller told deputies the child's biological mother, who does not have custody of the girl and also lives in the house, was also gone.
Investigators found evidence leading them to believe the mother took the child and was going to Pennsylvania or New Jersey with her boyfriend, Mellinger said.
Pennsylvania State Police stopped their vehicle on Interstate-70 near Pittsburgh and found the girl unharmed, Mellinger said. Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter helped arrange a flight to bring the girl back to Madison County.
The mother and boyfriend have been charged on the suspicion of kidnapping, Mellinger said. Their identities have not been released.
The investigation into the incident remains under investigation.
