MUNCIE — "Heinous and disturbing," were the words Delaware County Circuit Court Judge Linda Raul Wolf used to describe the death of three-month-old Shae Anne Marie Styhl.
Monday, the judge sentenced the baby's mothers, 33-year-old Sarah Styhl to 40-years in prison.
At the sentencing in Muncie, Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said that in 17-years as a prosecutor he could not "recall a single case where the injuries were as extensive, pervasive and severe as in this case."
Early this month, Styhl pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
"This helpless innocent three-month-old child had over 40 injuries, including broken bones in various stages of healing, and burns virtually all over her body," said Hoffman.
Last year, Muncie Police Department officers were called to the YMCA on a report of an unresponsive infant. Styhl and her baby had been staying at the shelter the four previous day. The police report said the infant had "what appeared to be burns covering most parts of her body." And there were numerous other injuries.
"Sarah Styhl has no conscience and is morally bankrupt," Hoffman said. "It is very frustrating that, to this day, the defendant will not tell us how those injuries were inflected."
