Nine arrested during drug investigation in Downtown Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Detectives have arrested nine people in connection with a drug investigation near Wheeler Mission in Downtown Indianapolis.

After an increase in overdoses and drug related activity in recent months near Wheeler Mission in Downtown Indianapolis, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and detectives obtained information and served three search warrants on Thursday, according to a press release from IMPD.

Detectives from IMPD, the ATF, and Indiana State Police served a total of three search warrants.

Authorities recovered 200 grams of heroin, 50 grams of crack cocaine, 30 grams of marijuana, more than $59,000, controlled pills, a pill press, and electronic scales after serving a search warrant on Thursday in the 3000 block of North Stuart Street, according to the press release. A 55-year-old man was arrested on the suspicion of drug dealing and possession of a controlled substance, dealing and possession of a crack cocaine and possession of marijuana.

On Thursday, ISP SWAT team officers located one pound of synthetic marijuana, half a pound of marijuana, three loaded handguns, a bulletproof vest, drug paraphernalia and $240, according to the press release. A 34-year-old man was arrested on the suspicion of dealing and possession of marijuana, dealing and possession of synthetic marijuana, and maintaining a common nuisance. A 28-year-old was also arrested on the suspicion of visiting a common nuisance.

After authorities served a search warrant on Thursday on North Oakland Avenue, they located 10 grams of heroin, controlled pills, ammunition and drug paraphernalia, according to the press release. A 47-year-old woman was arrested on the suspicion of maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia. A 74-year-old man was arrested on the suspicion of dealing and possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a common nuisance, A 43-year-old was arrested on the suspicion of visiting a common nuisance. A 53-year-old man was arrested on the suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, and maintaining a common nuisance. A 58-year-old man was arrested on the suspicion possession of a controlled substance, possession of cocaine, and visiting a common nuisance. A 68-year-old was arrested on the suspicion of unlawful possession of a syringe, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

"This is just another example of the Excellent work by the Downtown Narcotics Unit," IMPD Downtown District Commander Phillip Burton said in a press release. "This particular Win is a continuation of some investigative work initiated around Wheeler’s Mission. However, this team maintained a high level of collaboration and communication with the other Districts and Units in an effort to reduce the distribution of narcotics and other crimes by securing warrants for individuals known to have criminal intentions and possibly be in possession of drugs and illegal firearms."
