CONNERSVILLE — A woman wanted for suspected shoplifting at an eastern Indiana store is facing additional charges after biting an off-duty Indiana State Police trooper who attempted to take her into custody.
It happened just after 9 a.m. Monday at the Walmart in Connersville. Indiana State Police Sgt. Brian Metcalfe, who was off duty at the time, stopped at the store to run in and pick up a few things. As he parked his marked cruiser, Metcalfe could see a female employee in the parking lot, police said.
The employee shouted and pointed at a woman walking across the parking lot saying she had stolen some items and struggled with employees when they confronted her, state police said. Metcalfe drove over to the woman as she got into a car parked in the lot and made contact with the suspect and another woman in the car.
Troopers said the shoplifting suspect attempted to get the car started and leave. When the other woman in the car prevented the suspect from leaving, the suspect got out and struggled with Metcalfe, attempting to escape on foot. State police said the woman bit Metcalfe's arm drawing blood and cut his head with the handcuffs.
The suspect, a 29-year-old woman from Anderson, was eventually taken into custody, troopers said. The woman was arrested and is being held on suspicion of felony battery on a law enforcement officer and suspicion of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, as the car she was in had been reported stolen out of Anderson.
