20-year-old dies after gunfire exchanged during alleged drug deal in Greenwood

GREENWOOD — Greenwood police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Odell Lane near U.S. 31 and Smith Valley Road Monday afternoon.

Arriving officers located a 20-year-old man, later identified at Jerimiah Sirr Martin of Greenwood, dead in an upstairs bedroom.

A 16-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were both taken in for questioning.

During the course of the investigation, the woman told police that she had left the teen home and while she was gone a man she knew called asking her to sell him some marijuana, according to court documents.

The man identified by the woman as "Black Boy" in court documents, later came to the home with Martin and threatened the 16-year-old.

During the exchange between the man identified as "Black Boy", Martin and the 16-year-old, the woman told police that the 16-year-old grabbed Martin's handgun and shoot him multiple times.

The man identified as "Black Boy" was caught in Indianapolis after fleeing the scene. He facing preliminary burglary charges.

WRTV will not name him until formal charges are filed.

Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to contact the Greenwood Police Department.

Schools in the area were briefly put on lockdown Monday afternoon but were later released following the incident.
