LAWRENCE —A suspect is dead after a police shooting in Lawrence on Friday.
According to IMPD, around 10:30 a.m. narcotics detectives were attempting to serve a warrant to an adult male suspect, known to be armed and dangerous, at the Park Terrace Motel in Lawrence.
Police said officers made several announcement for the suspect to exit the motel room but did not get any response.
At that point, police said SWAT officers made forced entry into the motel room. There they located two adults coming out of the restroom. Police said they gave verbal commands for the individuals to get on the ground. An adult female listened to officer commands and was safely detained for questioning.
The adult male, however, did not follow SWAT commands. Police said as officers attempted to handcuff the suspect, a "struggle" occurred. The suspect pulled away and police said at some point he retrieved a Draco firearm.
This resulted in shots being fired by police.
The suspect was transported to the hospital, where they later died.
No uninvolved citizens were injured during this incident. Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community and there is no suspect outstanding.
Detectives located two firearms in the motel room.
The officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The two SWAT officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting investigation.
The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.
A large police presence is still in the area as an investigation remains active.
This is a developing story.
