INDIANAPOLIS -- A 28-year-old man drove recklessly on I-465 in October 2017, crashing into another vehicle and killing a 7-year-old girl, police say.
The crash happened around noon on Oct. 13, 2017 on I-465 near Allisonville Road.
Indiana State Police investigators say Robert Kearney II was driving about 75 mph in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado on I-465 and struck the back of the Ford Explorer. The explorer was going about 54 mph. The speed limit in that area is 55 mph.
Zoe Martin, 7, was in the backseat of the Explorer and suffered serious injuries. She died at Riley Hospital a week later.
Police believe Kearney was driving recklessly before the crash, and tried to continue driving to flee the scene, but his vehicle became disabled. Investigators also believe Kearney offered drugs to the tow truck driver as payment for towing his truck.
Kearney was arrested Jan. 31. He faces the following charges, in addition to an outstanding theft warrant from Johnson County:
- Reckless Homicide (Level 5 Felony)
- Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death (Level 5 Felony)
- Possession of a Look-Alike Substance (Class C Misdemeanor)
