MIAMI COUNTY — The speed limit on four-lane U.S. 31 in northern Miami County, about 90-miles north of Indianapolis, is 60 miles-per-hour.

Wednesday, Indiana State Police say they clocked a Michigan woman driving 116 miles-per-hour with her unrestrained one-year-old daughter in the front seat of the Nissan passenger car.

The southbound car was spotted by an off-duty trooper heading north. Trooper Mike Meiser's radar recorded the vehicle's speed as 56 miles over the limit.

Meiser was able to pull the car over. According to the police report, he saw the toddler sleeping in the front without a safety seat. The 24-year-old woman from Benton Harbor, Michigan was driving on a suspended license. She was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent, along with reckless driving. She was also issued citations for not having a valid operator’s license and child restraint violation.

The child was released into the care of a family member.

State law requires all children under the age of eight to be in a child safety or booster seat.
