INDIANAPOLIS -- Police are trying to find out who stole copper from around the sides of a popular Mexican restaurant on Indy's east side.

The burglary happened Friday at about 3 p.m., at the La Parada Mexican restaurant at 1642 E. New York St.

The suspects even cut the power to the restaurant, allowing them to get into the building and steal more copper. One employee said he was nervous over the theft, because he thinks whoever did it lives nearby. Days earlier, somebody broke into his van and stole stereo equipment, the employee said.

A man who lives nearby said he saw a white van parked behind the store, but thought it was just someone working on the building.

"About 4 or 4:30 in the morning I heard our dogs barking," Mark Meadows said. "I looked out our window there and I see a white van pull up behind the utility boxes. I didn't think anything of it - looked like a normal work van. Guys got out, it looked like they were working but turns out they were robbing."
