INDIANAPOLIS — Two men are in critical condition after they were shot near downtown Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon, police said.

It happened shortly after 12:45 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Fernway Street, according to a report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

IMPD spokeswoman Officer Genae Cook said officers were called on report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found one man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken by medics to an area hospital.

Cook said while officers were on scene they learned a second person had also been shot at the scene and had been taken to an area hospital by family members. Both men are in critical condition, she said.

The suspect fled the scene in another vehicle, Cook said. Police do not yet have a suspect description.

"We believe that this is an isolated incident that this was not some random act," Cook said. "We encourage the people that live in this community to come forth with any information they have."

Both victims were inside a sedan that crashed into the back of a pickup truck that happened to be parked on the street, Cook said.
