INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis woman was arrested after police found five children living in filthy conditions on the city's east side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a house near the intersection of Keystone Avenue and Michigan Street early Sunday morning on a report of a person being held against their will.

Police found five children living with Kathleen Ayers. Officers say the kids were living in bad conditions.

"You can tell that it seems like the kids aren't getting well taken care of," one of Ayers' former neighbors said. "I on several occasions was questioning whether or not they were feeding the kids."

The neighbor said when Ayers moved in, she had to lend them plates and silverware to use -- which they ended up losing.

"I don't know how you lose cutlery," the neighbor said.

She said she noticed that the children didn't have many outfits.

Police determined nobody was being held against their will, but eventually arrested Ayers on preliminary charges of child neglect, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.

A child protective services representative was notified.

Last week, Ayers pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect and one count of driving while intoxicated - endangering a person under 18.

Ayers is still in the Marion County Jail. As part of her sentencing for the previous crimes, she has a 720-day suspended jail term.
