GREENWOOD — A woman who was shot by a man who exchanged gunfire with officers during a standoff in Greenwood Monday morning has died.
Officers were initially called to the 300 block of Legacy Boulevard for a report of a woman who had been shot.
According to Greenwood Police Department Assistant Chief Matt Fillenwarth, when officers arrived and started surrounding the residence, Randy Sutt came out of the house - armed with a gun - and exchanged gunfire with officers.
Sutt was struck, possibly by bullet fragments, but not seriously hurt. Sutt eventually surrendered and was taken into custody and treated for his non-life threatening injuries.
Inside the house, police found Cecelia Cooper Laverne Babcock, 55, in an upstairs bedroom with a bullet wound to the head. She was rushed to the hospital and placed on life-support where she later died.
Fillenwarth said Sutt lived at the home with his brother and Cecelia, who is his brother's fiancee. The three were in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. Crime scene specialists and officers at the scene used extra precautions while treating and speaking with suspects and witnesses because of that information.
Sutt is facing multiple charges including murder in connection with the incident. Formal charges will be filed by the Johnson County Prosecutor's Office.
