Young woman charged with battery on baby girl

MUNCIE — A 20-year-old Ft. Wayne woman faces battery and neglect charges for allegedly causing serious injuries to a baby she was caring for in Muncie.

Amber Vannatter is charged with four counts of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14, two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, and one count of false informing.

According to information from the Delaware County Prosecutor and the Muncie Police Department, Vannatter showed up with the baby at the mother's workplace. The mother, realizing her infant was badly hurt, took her to Ball Memorial Hospital.

Police interviewed Vannatter who admitted to holding the baby against a moving treadmill, and burning her at least twice with a cigarette lighter.

Doctors found a number of abrasion and burn injuries on the baby, along with a broken wrist.

Charges against Vannatter were filed in Delaware County Circuit Court.
