INDIANAPOLIS -- A 17-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was shot in the face Tuesday morning while sleeping in her northside home.

Police say the shooting happened at around 4:30 a.m., at a house on the 3500 block of Illinois Avenue.

Somebody opened fire from outside the house into the building, hitting the girl while she slept.

She was hit in the face, and taken to IU Methodist Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An extended family lives there, and police are interviewing them to find out why somebody would shoot at the house.

Police found several shell casings while searching the back alley of the house.

There are currently no leads on a suspect.

This shooting was the second act of violence against an underage person in about eight hours. Just before midnight on Monday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the back on the near east side.
