MARION — An employee at the General Motors facility in Marion died in a forklift incident Wednesday morning, according to police.

Mark McKnight, 57, of Gas City, was killed when an employee accidentally back his forklift into the floor-to-ceiling wall and caused it to tip over, Marion Police Department Deputy Chief Stephen Dorsey said in a press release.

A site director at the facility, who was familiar with the plant's operations at the time of the incident, told officers the employees were moving a floor-to-ceiling wall unit of metal tubing welded together, Dorsey said. The wall unit wasn't secured to the floor or a connecting beam yet.

An investigation indicates the death was accidental, Dorsey said. An autopsy at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center is pending.

"GM is cooperating with local authorities to investigate a fatality involving a team member from one of the 3rd party contract firms that support the Marion Metal Center," Kim Carpenter, a GM spokesperson, said.
