GREENWOOD — Ground was broken Monday on a new veterans memorial Greenwood.

The Greater Greenwood Veterans Memorial, at the corner of Surina Way and Meridian Street, will be a centerpiece honoring all branches of service with memorial bricks in one area, along with memorial benches and other features, according to a release from the city.

The fundraising for the project is ongoing.

"We are on a 12-to-13 month push to try to get this project erected by Freedom Festival in 2020," chairperson of the Greenwood Veteran Memorial Committee said. "We need people to come down and believe in the project and believe in permanently memorizing the service of our veterans, police and fire in our community. We need people to step up."

Greenwood mayor Mark W. Myers, the Greenwood Veterans Memorial Committee and Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory participated in the event.
