GREENWOOD, Ind. – Soon before the Greenwood Park Mall opened for thousands of shoppers, they welcomed a few special guests for the Caring Santa event Sunday.
This is the third year where the mall has opened its doors to families, including children with special needs, before mall hours so they could spend intimate time with Santa.
For some children, seeing Santa can be magical but for others it can be a nightmare with huge crowds standing around.
The event allows children to experience Santa Claus and take a picture with him in a quiet setting.
Parents Sarah and Joseph Dant, who have a son with special needs, said they enjoyed the environment.
“He instantly took to him, which is interesting because he has dealt with Santa before and didn't do as well as he has with the Santa here so that's really great,” said Joseph.
Organizers said Caring Santa is gaining in popularity.
