GREENWOOD — A Greenwood school building dating to the early 1950's is coming down.
The former Greenwood Middle School on Madison Avenue, south of Main Street, is making way for new development.
Before it was a middle school, the building was the city's high school.
Everything except the north gymnasium, which will become a downtown fieldhouse, is being demolished.
"Our city's core is literally transforming before our eyes," said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers. "Being born and raised in Greenwood and having lived here nearly my entire life, I could not be more proud of the progress our city is making toward future prosperity."
The city purchased the building from the school system in 2017 with the intent to redevelop the downtown area known as Old Town.
The city is in discussions with private developers on what to do with the property.
Possibilities include hundreds of apartments and townhomes, retail and office space, and nine acres of open space.
"Our plans for the future of downtown envision a thriving city core with easy walkability, dynamic public gathering spaces and connectivity to trails, parks and other public assets," said Myers.
Plans also include close to two miles of what the city calls," reconstructed streetscape."
